March is fast approaching, and that means that St. Patrick’s Day will soon be here with all of its Irish pomp and festivities. Heaping pots of corned beef and cabbage will be served alongside frosty glasses of Irish ales and stouts for this annual holiday once again. If your business or organization wants to get in on the fun, The T-Shirt Company can help you create a batch of fun shirts that will commemorate a great party day.
There are plenty of recognizable symbols you can use to easily create an Irish-themed T-shirt. First of all, start with the color scheme. Green, white and orange are the colors of the Irish flag, and it’s easy to incorporate these colors into a shirt design. Use one of these colors, preferably green, to print a shamrock on your shirts.
Shamrocks are an old symbol of people from Celtic lineage, and it rose to prominence in response to English invasions of Irish lands. As this article from History.com describes, the shamrock, which had always represented a sense of spring and rebirth, came to symbolize growing Irish nationalism as early as the seventeenth century. Typically, this icon is a symbol of Irish displeasure concerning English rule.
Snakes are another icon given to us from Celtic traditions, although the snake has more to do with Christianity than with pagan religions. Folklore states that St. Patrick stood on a hill in Ireland and banished all snakes from the island with only his wooden staff. It’s believed that there were never actually any snakes on the island, but that this story represents the spread of Catholicism through Ireland and the eventual disappearance of pagan traditions.
Some St. Patrick’s Day staples don’t go as far back as the shores of Eire and the ancient times of Gaelic tribes. Interestingly enough, corned beef wasn’t the Irish staple it was until immigrants began to make St. Patrick’s Day a much more celebrated event in New York City. Irish nationals learned from Jewish neighbors that they could replace their Irish bacon with much cheaper corned beef to create a dish that mirrored their traditional feasts for a much lower price.
